When disability and poverty coincide, it creates a situation that seems particularly hopeless. To counteract this, we support the Aluna Móvil project in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), which offers curative education through home visits to families in poverty with a disabled child.
Thus, the primary objective of Aluna Móvil is to promote a loving and emotional relationship between mother (or parents) and child, which not only reduces the risks of rejection, abuse, or neglect, but also decisively strengthens and improves the inalienable fundamental rights and quality of life of the child.
An Aluna Móvil team is composed of two early childhood educators plus a social worker, and when necessary, the advice of an interdisciplinary team is also consulted. With one Aluna Móvil team, approximately 100-120 infants or toddlers and their families in a neighborhood characterized by severe poverty receive two hours of care, support, and counseling per week.
