The majority of the rural population in Zanzibar is engaged in agriculture and fishing. Unfortunately, their income from this is not sufficient; more than half of the population live below the poverty line. Due to the lack of alternative income opportunities, the project links the establishment of modern beekeeping to increase income with the use of multifunctional trees, which are used as an alternative to the threatened mangroves. The trees provide nectar for the bees, can be used as firewood and livestock feed, and at the same time contribute to improving soil quality.
